Malibu’s first residents, the Native American Chumash, named this beautiful stretch of coastline “Humaliwo” for its loud surf. It was in 1542 when Portuguese explorer Juan Cabrillo discovered the Malibu shoreline as he stopped for fresh water on his journey north. In 1802, the first legal claim to land was made in Malibu, but not until a 1920 court decision did the land begin to be sold.
The first lots were sold to celebrities along a strand of beach called the Malibu Colony. This exclusive beach neighborhood soon became a hideaway for famous actors and entertainment personalities. Today, beautiful homes dot the ocean side of this small town community world famous as the playground of movie stars, musicians, artists, writers, producers, and all types of personalities from the entertainment and business world.
Surfing was first introduced to Malibu by famed Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku, who in 1927 taught the sport to early Malibu surfers. Today, visitors to Malibu beaches will see local residents and professionals of the surfing world enjoying the surf on the beaches where American surf culture began.
